As people have pointed out, subsets of economists are good at different things: game theory and modeling equilibria, marginal analysis, understanding incentives, etc. Super rare that you encounter single economists able to straddle all these disciplines though.

Ability to recognize? Economists understand the relationship between events, and the great macroeconomists can recognize the impact certain things (ex: increasing the supply of $) have on other things (ex: the markets)
