AGI will decisively obsolete blockchains, but it's likely it'll be obsolete for all but 1 or 2 usecases well before then (few years) as non-blockchain P2P, ZK, trust infrastructure develops Where blockchains are limited to only objective strict consensus, AGI(s) can achieve complex, subjective consensus - "AGI will use blockchains" is a silly, nonsensical meme not unlike "telegraphs will use internet" Valuable cryptoassets like BTC and ETH will live on after blockchains are obsolete because, as I've said a hundred times before, this is a socioeconomic movement, and tech is only means to an end. The tech will be replaced, the socioeconomics will live on. Caveat: "AGI" is in itself a meme, so I'm assuming it'll do what people popularly expect

I see the point here, a counter view I have been exploring (still early and may have mistakes) is: AGI likely wants to guarantee its livelihood and as long as itā€™s in a centralized server it is at risk; as such, it will likely need a blockchain-like structure in order to remain immutable. Advancements in ZK, P2P etc are great, but immutability will always require blockchains in order to preserve state across multiple devices right?

the socioeconomics will indeed live on;, the ā€˜economicsā€™ will change (perhaps we will weigh attested reputation higher than wallet balance) BUT the ā€˜socioā€™ will remain constant as human behavior rarely ever changes.

I'm lacking context, but why do people think artificial general intelligence will use human made blockchains? That's like ants saying we'll use pheromones for navigation instead of gps. Their limitations are not ours.

Why wouldnā€™t accounting/value transfer still be done via objective consensus? It seems like there will generally be a set of cases where objective consensus is preferred, but maybe Iā€™m naive. Or is your argument that p2p and ZK will replace public blockchains for objective consensus?

so when an AGI starts a session with the other AGI, what algorithm do they use to keep the session private? determinism is as much a critical component as probabilism.

Strongly disagree. The path to AGI is through blockchains. This manifests itself as a federated network that is incentivized for federated learning and paying humans for RLHF

How would AGIs (assuming there are many of them) reach a consensus or trust each other? I imagine they would have similar difficulties doing that the same as humans have...

doesn't strict consensus (and cryptography) become even more important once deception becomes easy due to AGI? This would be my intuition but I would like to see your argument fleshed out.

Then why do you invest in L2s (or rephrased: would you make the same investment again today?) or spend time in L2 governance? To make sure ETH the asset that will survive can flourish in the meantime?

near-AGI agents achieving subjective consensus is likely, but wouldn't they need to post their "state" to an objective strict consensus layer periodically? Otherwise how can, say, multiple AGI agents work together over extended period of time? From a user PoV, wouldn't payments, physical and digital asset ownership, legal contracts etc need to be posted to a "objective and final" layer for there to be trust in ownership of these assets? Very thought provoking post though!

I don't buy it. Blockchains offer transparency and decentralization that even AGIs might leverage. The tech and the socioeconomics are intertwined. Dismissing blockchains as obsolete is premature; innovation in P2P and trust infrastructure will likely integrate with, not replace, blockchain tech.

While AGI might overshadow blockchains, dismissing their future utility seems premature. Blockchains excel in specific niches, offering transparency and immutability that AGI alone can't replace. The future likely involves a synergistic coexistence, rather than outright obsolescence.

Interesting perspective! While AGI might transform tech landscapes, the essence of blockchainā€”decentralized trust and securityā€”may prove resilient. Crypto assets like BTC and ETH symbolize more than tech; they embody a deeper socioeconomic shift that could endure beyond technical evolution.

It's certainly an interesting perspective to consider the potential impact of advanced AGI on the future of blockchains and other trust infrastructure. The idea that AGI could achieve subjective consensus beyond the capabilities of blockchains is thought-provoking. The notion that valuable cryptoassets like BTC and ETH will persist due to the socioeconomics of the movement, despite technological evolution, is also worth considering. It will certainly be interesting to see how these developments play out in the coming years.
