A question I’m pondering: Farcaster is a product-led protocol, but is Warpcast the right product? Twitter is the smallest of all at-scale social networks. Although Twitter-fans will tell you it has outsized status for its size, it’s never been able to break 1B users. What would Farcaster look like if Warpcast was modeled after Instagram or TikTok? How would that affect protocol priorities and roadmap?

To be clear, I’m glad Warpcast is modeled after Twitter. I’m primarily a wordcel and Twitter was my main social network before Warpcast. But none of my offchain friends use Twitter. Instagram is still the gorilla and revealed preference is that most people prefer images to text content.

Twitter is word nerd app Crypto is full of nerds Imo it’s uniquely hard for crypto people to build anything other than nerd apps Dan and V are brilliant but I think would struggle to build a coolness powered app (like most of us) The diff is if they build Farcaster right, somebody else can do it for them

warpcast feels like a great place for intellectuals, writers, builders rn for a large number of creatives (artists, photographers, etc) to do well i absolutely think we need an insta like client at scale tend to believe that replicating it alone won’t bring everyone, but as we continue to iterate on incentives something will likely click

I think it's the right product for the founding team, the initial audience, and the kinds of interactions that this group has with each other. But I do not think that it's the best experience for close friends, and jury is out on whether it's the biggest potential product.

I think the driving motivator is the text format Short-form text generates network effects faster than images or videos because: 1) it's the easiest to create 2) info / storage cost (ie. info density) is high That pretty much leaves X, FB, and Reddit as best skeumorphics WC makes the right choice of combining X + Reddit

I think it kind of has to be modeled off Twitter because it's crypto-first. So if you're starting with the assumption of building decentralized social that grows with crypto, then you need to start with the twitter form factor because that's what crypto users are familiar with

Very interesting question. I guess they modelled it after twitter because that’s the best place to bring people who would also be technical and build things atop the protocol (or more likely to)

Do people even build things on Instagram? Seems to be outside of the realm of use cases. Crypto is all about project building and connections. I think text is the way to go for that stuff and an Instagram model only offers a very narrow pathway to use the protocol that way.

nope - personal bias obvi, and i get the focus on a twitter experience to some extent, but channels (a major part of the protocol) are totally underserved. Building for communities is challenging, but it's also huge opportunity

very interesting question... i've never been able to get into insta or tiktok... i would rather read vs watch a video of something. i feel like i can skim through things rather quickly vs waiting until the end of a video... it would be interesting if warpcast had a feature at the top of mobile (that you could turn on or off) that would allow you to have a stories-type interface... I wonder how it would affect app performance though i'm always afraid of video that i'm going to wake up my wife in the middle of the night as the audio may be unpredictable...

Very interesting question. I think we are starting to see sneak peaks of what it might look like. Have you seen /vibra? It's a video/photo focused Farcaster client that I think is doing some really unique things. The first time I used it I got definite Snapchat vibes from it. I actually did an hour long live-stream on it with @jpfraneto.eth. Check it out if you're curious what this might look like! :)

I think that there should be more apps that simply connect to Farcaster and could share text posts with frames. Right now the two main apps that I know sync with Farcaster to add multimedia are /drakula (TikTok-style video sharing app) and /moshicam (designed to share IRL moments onchain).

Super question and framing. Is the right question to expect growth from Warpcast versus the protocol quickly enables and incentives lots of clients which together aggregate the larger audience?

Probably a solution for the niche that Warpcast is aimed at, since in order to have a product that people could build on, it had to be based on Twitter/X. TikTok and Insta are more for content production and dissemination. Would you watch short videos of people talking about onchain projects rather than discussing them in real time?

If Warpcast was modeled after Instagram for example, you’d be forfeiting ideas for content How many images will users have to post before they get their idea across with what would be easily understood with text content

IMO farcaster is dominated with a lot of crypto natives that came uses twitter as a primary social network, instagram and ticktok is more inclined to video and picture content, while twitter is text or a mixture of both

Getting your first 10k users is the first major step and one that many startups fail at. Warpcast modeled after Twitter, targeting a cryptonative audience, gave farcaster far more than 10k users.
