After using it for a few days I feel that Farcaster is a structurally superior platform to X for a few reasons: 1) Channels, 2) Ability to “tip” and seamlessly transmit economic value, 3) Greater range of functions and possible interactions. Anecdotally the culture also seems to be more harmonious and less bitterly ironic and angry than X which has a famously cantankerous user base and is a site of serious social conflict. What Farcaster lacks so far is the network effect of having a broad range of people discussing a fuller scope of subjects of interest to the public. If Farcaster gets that network effect (“gradually then suddenly”) it could really take off, not just for the benefit of its users but for the public at large which needs healthy forums for social and political discourse.

As far as I’m concerned, I haven’t seen a single Nazi yet and that alone puts farcaster ahead of Twitter, where I have at least six in my mentions a day.

Not to mention that having ownership and the ability to query your own social data is a huge benefit that people can realize quickly once coming to Farcaster. Being able to see exactly how many likes you've gotten, etc is cool and I know normies wold love to "own" their social data.

I communicated on Twitter that engagement for my award-winning wildlife photography channel was slow. It was amazing to me how the community highlighted the issue and boosted my channel. Farcaster has way more promise in engaging community action.

FYI, mods of the geopolitics channel have essentially stated they may hide things that are not in line with US policy — this happens without you knowing. the founder of the app also does NOT support transparency around channel moderation. so as far as being a place for “healthy” discourse… not sure about that
