Aesthetics are at the heart of civilization, not incidental to it. Aesthetic sense should reinforce the values of a society and remind people of them at every glance. They are physical evidence of the refinement of a culture, as well as a message and inheritance for future generations.

This is why we need to have beautiful buildings, streets, and public artisanry as opposed to merely functional ones. Beauty is indeed an aspect of function.

I’ve been thinking about this in historic terms; how do we incentive the creation of beautiful structures again. I think that we may have to outsource some public infrastructure construction to very wealthy individuals who want to leave a physical legacy of grandeur to the public

The first time I read it as 'anaesthetics,' but the second time, read as 'aesthetics.' Big difference! lol.

weird thought, maybe too deep in neurolinguistics, but do you think that the exclusive phonetics in certain regions is due to the diet? that would definitely influence everything downstream.

I will partially disagree with this, though, because there are some very aesthetically pleasing science experiments that seem to keep a subcultural aesthetic, and so I'd also argue that presenting "culturae franca" may be contradicted by local idiosyncrasies.

Aesthetics are an extension of ourselves, and like you mention, both create and reinforce our values.

Indeed, beauty begets beauty.

Education plays a big role here

The failure of architecture (or one might argue success of the Bauhaus school) and the misguided teachings by 'prestigious' urban planning programs created a bunch of culturally void, efficiency hawks

Part of it is also the entry requirements skewing skills towards math and physics, instead of the arts, humanities, etc

Being surrounded by aesthetics can indeed foster creativity and innovation. A well-designed environment often stimulates positive emotions and inspiration, which can lead to greater engagement and collaboration. Moreover, aesthetically pleasing spaces can reinforce a sense of community and shared values, reminding people of the importance of connection and collective well-being.

Has profit margins corrupted design aesthetic? 

Does maximizing for conversion rates undermine creativity? 

Have we lost the sense of creating things for the sheer obsessive satisfaction of making something that resonates with others in exchange for a better bottom line? 

These are the kinds of questions I like to see coming up in this industry where we literally get to start from scratch with all our theories.
