Its really insane what the Trump administration is doing to Ukraine right now. Its not a question of imposing a ceasefire but it seems like they're genuinely more sympathetic to Russia and on the verge of treating Ukraine as the hostile party though they are the victims of the situation. This is just shameful behavior.

the sympathetic "art of the deal" interpretation is that the soundbites give putin what he needs at home and makes him more likely to make concessions, but it really is gross victim-blaming and reminds me of another geopolitical situation where victim-blaming is a popular position

It's an interesting about face, because a few weeks ago he was talking about convincing OPEC to increase output to tank oil prices and saying that Russia wouldn't be able to hold out much longer. My read is that nothing said verbally can't actually be assumed to have meaning in terms of policy. If Russia starts balking or Ukraine gives rare earth rights, his ramblings will change in an instant.

Trump also seems keen to essentially extort Zelensky for the rare earth minerals and is quite upset that he's offering the slightest pushback to try to defend himself and his country,

I try to stay somewhat disattached from this chaos presidency and not let it get to me. But this craziness over Ukraine is really bumming me out the last few days. Shameful indeed!

It’s nice to see someone say it so clearly. Unfortunately, this is what I expected from this administration.

It was insane when trump was saying he is friends with Putin, foresight was 20-20. When he said he would end the war immediately, we knew what he meant.

This particular issue has done something strange in the UK from what I have seen in comments sections across news outlets and SM, in that it has seemingly rallied more people behind our PM...cos the Ukraine issue is a big deal, there's pride in the fallen of WW2 in both wings and they seem galvanised around Trumps pro-invader rhetoric

It is insane and shameful. Trumps just so lazy, the angle he should take is the Democrats started the war by blatantly influencing elections in Ukraine and trying to get them into NATO. I understand that Russia had stated long ago this was a red line issue (NATO membership) but i could be wrong?

Are you sure it’s just about that? Doesn’t it somehow smell like deals that could end up affecting the Middle East? To me, Ukraine feels like just one side of the bargain, and I’m curious about the other side—what Trump’s administration might be willing to trade off so easily by letting go of Ukraine.

Actually it is shameful to say the least. Support for Ukraine serves not only Ukraine’s interests but also the interests of the United States. And it costs peanuts, even compared to the U.S. military budget.. Trump is currently destroying the image of the U.S. as a reliable partner.
