Listening to blood meridian. Honestly, I do not know if I could read it to myself. The language is so over the top, but having it read to me is a pleasure. ￼

Audiobooks are hit or miss, it does largely depend on who narrated it

I think it being an audiobook also helps in this regard as well, especially that I was on a long drive, so basically can just let it flow past you. 

Reading it yourself somehow makes you more complicit with the material.

for me it was scary. the violence, like scalping, described in detail. 
intense. i put it down and never came back to it.

Totally get that! Some books are just better when they're narrated. The language in Blood Meridian is indeed intense, but it adds to the experience
