hmmm that’s a tough one. I’ve gone through quite a few, some are more than hobbies though:

- building custom PCs
- mechanical keyboards
- coffee
- hi-fi
- japanese knives
- tennis
- classical music
- photography
- chess
- whiskey
- gas-powered RC cars (lol)

I think hi-fi might be the most enduring and meaningful for me because it brings together my interests in engineering and music. when I left my previous career as a classical musician there was a void left as a result, and I think hi-fi is one way for me to fill that void. I wish it wasn’t quite as insanely expensive, though 😂

it’s also allowed me to learn more about electrical engineering and hardware more generally, which only surfaced as interests for me after working in the tech industry. but if I look back, it’s sort of obvious that I would be into this stuff. I was taking AP calculus in high school, building computers, taking programming courses… I actually have a lot of regret from not pursuing those interests further at the time.

okay, thought about this for awhile. I’ll give you a good one and a bad one.

good: my ability to remain calm under pressure. @brileigh and I were about 50ft from an active shooting in nyc back in january. luckily unharmed but we needed to get very far away very quickly. got off the pavement and was able to get us in an uber in 1-2 min.

bad: how easily I lost perspective on how far I’ve come since ~2020. literal rock bottom, broke my arm in half + covid, negative net worth, fast forward to late 2024 and we have nearly everything we could want. past me wouldn’t have even believed it, yet it still wasn’t enough. december’s euphoric markets weren’t enough to get me to sell. so definitely gave back some unrealized pnl and regret that I wasn’t more grounded.

aside from everyday stuff, probably my career trajectory. I wish I had a more interesting and less self-centered answer but that’s what’s on my mind atm. obviously lots of other things happening around me as well, not oblivious to that.

spent the majority of the last 3yr doing what I’d broadly describe as marketing but also included bizdev, sales, community management, ops. definitely learned a lot about myself during that process and feel good about leaving my previous career in photography/teaching behind.

now trying to figure out if marketing is really my core aptitude and if not which direction I should take. after some introspection I seem to have a knack for research, so am heading in that direction atm to become an analyst/researcher.

I would say could be a 🚩 unless it’s a new practice in which case it’s probably a valid acquisition strategy. 

good established dental practice should be overflowing with patients, can’t see why they’d want growth hack strategies lol.

but hey, main thing is the expertise of the dentist, endodentist, etc. as well as how up-to-date and/or specialized their equipment is.

ideally you want to find someone who specializes in whatever you’re getting done, whether that’s extraction, root canals, etc.
