(I'm a big fan of in-person. Apart from the better information flow, there's also the energy part where other people inspire you to do the hard things)

I think I'm sick of hearing from Sam Altman who while he has obv had success has a very narrow work experience. As someone said below, his version of a startup it might not work for but...there are others. Seems like he's the chosen one to be raised up in 2023 to 'guru' status where previous we had 'the genius of SBF'

I dunno, the team working on Farcaster/Warpcast is remote 🤷‍♀️ Bitcoin was literally started by someone who never identified themselves at all, all work was truly remote. Altman is just projecting his own bias towards having to see his employees’ faces to feel like work is getting done.

It's a myth. OS development is a proof. It's true in person *can* boost creativity, but only with relevant parties and when all have stakes in the outcome. Remote/in person is not even an issue. Real issue is to be motivated and to want to make smth happen. Structures [often] lack that and look for excuses

Idk. Don't get me wrong, there's magic in being together. But I work in a team based out of, uhh... Germany, Portugal, France, Brazil, Colombia, Colorado, California, Greece, Sri Lanka. Many of them are very niche experts. Good luck assembling this team (on this budget) otherwise.

Our co is fully remote, and I view culture as critically as product - which means constantly iterating for our employees, and having my big and small bets on culture in the future. Remote is a big bet for us ✌️ Deel is a great example of a fully remote company 😊😊

It doesn't work well for US companies because they do too many zoom meetings. 😂 In the remote work outcome is the most important, so middle managers organize meetings to show that they do something.

Maybe true for large companies. But this is a bad take for small teams.

What makes in person so attractive? How have lazy middle managers and brokers of information benefited from in person cultures? Does it have to be fully in person or fully remote, or can we just be discerning professionals and acknowledge that it’s a spectrum? Best teams choose for themselves, not from Altman.

He is fundamentally wrong because it assumes that his model for startups works for all startups, at least given this clipped quote. Context is everything, different strokes for different folks IMO.

Dependent on founders, purpose, and culture. Every company/project embodies the genius and pathology of the founder(s), and what’s best depends on the needs of the humans involved, which is so dynamic on conditions for growth (which often are set by the founders/leadership).

it’s an alignment problem: Work adapted to in person expectations. When they are gone, productivity dips.

Successful coordination rests upon clear communication and the rate of actionable clarity participants can reach and foster win-wins. Whether communication is always better in-person is debatable. It seems, for majority of the population, it is better. Those doing it well remotely seems like a minority.
