I feel like there are wildly different views on what is PMF and how many have achieved that in crypto How many crypto companies would you say have achieved PMF? Can be a range if you don't want to go through and classify

The more products I work on, the more I think retention is the most important part of PMF. This is my favorite definition of PMF https://twitter.com/eshear/status/1155180521485242368 With this in mind, I think maybe less than 10: Coinbase, Uniswap, Etherscan, Yuga, Alchemy, Circle, Opensea, Dune

I like Pmarca's definition of PMF. When the market pulls product out of the startup faster that you can deliver. I think Maker and Uniswap definitely have PMF. Farcaster's traction is 🤯 , not sure if PMF though. What's your view on PMF? How to tell when it's happening?

I think the best measure is: "what % of users would be very disappointed if they couldn't use the product anymore?" I'm not sure anything in crypto fits this bill atm e.g., I'd be very disappointed if I couldn't use TG, X, my macbook, uber — but in crypto id just be mildly inconvenienced

Real PMF is when people keep using your product after the last bull/bubble market passes. This implies PMF most likely is only achieved with non crypto natives.

For a lot of these companies, the market has yet to be defined. Part of what will make this next decade interesting is that the goalposts will constantly be shifting. So it will not only be a question of who can ship compelling products, but also of who can adapt most effectively.

I had read an interesting take from Chapter 1 on this where crpyto PMF is different to SaaS PMF e.g. Coinbase and Uniswap having close volumes whereas one has 70 MM users vs other having 700k

Rough estimate is 1-10 companies that have achieved enduring PMF. One twist that I'd layer on is that because you don't "own" the user in crypto I'd think about it as products that have PMF and less so companies. Things like stablecoins, NFT marketplaces are good examples IMO where companies can gain and lose PMF

Kind of depends on the market you want to address. For crypto-native projects (e.g. Uniswap), the market is limited to crypto users. For other companies, the market is 'all sports fans' (e.g. Sorare) or 'virtually everybody' (e.g. Coinbase). Much harder to design a product for such a market.

I guess that depends from one narrative to another Approximation of the global market is unclear, however for the on-chain degen utility the market can be estimated => PMF achievable Also narrative > technology in crypto, so I guess better fitting in the ecosystem comes when the value has eco in the community...

pmf success metrics are typically set by the founders based on the goals of the product and company. Etherscan vs metamask vs coinbase vs opensea all achieved PMF, but are racing on different tracks. Crypto at large hasn’t touched PMF on a mass consumer scale, we only have indicators that it’s worth more investment
