People in stories finding out that people are not who they say they are that comes to mind: - Odysseus being recognized by Euryclea, his old nurse recognizing his scar, after being reunited for the first time with Penelope in book 19 of the odyssey, has to pretend that he doesn’t recognize her and he is just a beggar - In Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, Imogene’s dead body is identified as not here because it does not have mole under her breast, I think it’s Posthumus who recognizes this - in The Mahabharata, Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, has specific markings and traits that allow his devotees and friends to recognize his divine identity but initially people do not know - when he reveals to Arjuna, you get the famous line - I have become death destroyer of worlds

The widow Tamar pretended to be a prostitute, slept with her father-in-law Judah, became pregnant, and later proved to Judah that the baby was his by presenting him with his own seal and rod, which he had given Tamar when he slept with her (Genesis 38)

Perhaps a tip of the hat to a key component of any Hero's Journey, a change of identity of the self, to become someone transformed, a self-discovery.

Krishna is actually not the destroyer of the world, it's Shiva. But there can be many interpretations of that line, so, I can understand the confusion.
