There’s really nothing better than a good book While movies are great, and tv shows as well, there is a level of fidelity that I can get from books that I just don’t feel like I get from books. It’s also where I am at the moment - just really enjoy books Also I’ve been enjoying fiction a lot more lately, and getting so much from it. Great stories are really hard to beat. Also as I get older maybe I’m just less inclined to spend time reading things I don’t enjoy

I'm confused by your use of the word fidelity here. Do you mean that you connect with books in a way that movies and tv lack for you?

I was working on a book reading site a couple of years ago and doing user interviews. One thing I hit upon with reading is that it seems to get you in a flow state that’s not possible with watching tv/movies. This seemed especially strong with fiction. Anyhoo, reading is good, reading fiction is better ;)

In storytelling nothing ever will beat the movies but as you said books are more original and unedited like what happened sometimes in movies. Movies may lack fidelity but will make you live the story more than a book can ever do

Books feel more full-contact It's like they take place IN you, instead of AT you

I read a lot when I was younger, and the relationship that I had with books is completely different compared with the relationship that I have with fictions nowadays. I remember almost everything I read, from Jung psychology lectures to Japanese industrialization history or Fantasy historic novels. Now I watch more tv fiction and I struggle in remember the topic just after few months. I mean, a book impact your memory in a different way and is (for my experience) the most powerful tool for knowledge.

The feeling after a great book is completely different from finishing a great movie. Somehow lasts longer and has a bigger impact in my mind usually

I really think you are right. I am now reading the 水滸伝 you mentioned the other day. I usually prefer mystery novels, but this is my first historical novel!! Still reading, but very interesting!

Books tickle my imagination whereas movies and TV present the output of others. I prefer books, but also enjoy some movies. However, I lose patience with audiobooks.

Adapting a novel to a movie is an act of rather extreme compression, and too often the movie doesn’t make sense unless you’ve read the book

Nothing unlocks my powers of mental visualisation as much as books. It’s the kind of slow release enjoyment that hits the right spot of my brain receptors. I’ve only read a few fiction books these last years, top tier each time thankfully and was a blast. These days, most of my none brain rot reading (Reddit) is Chat GPT, api documentation, blogs about various topics, and business books (entrepreneur bios and general business stories, as well as ebooks on specific topics)

Yes, I think that a good book is more enjoyable than a good movie, the emotion is different. But it is also easier to find good movies than to find good and impressive books.

Honestly I prefer movies to book but I have a friend who likes reading books and when I asked her, she was like books open you mind to many possibilities and imagination, you’d be able to create and customize your character and feel the story more rather than just watching a movie

For me personally this is the same and it's because you make your own movie from a book you're reading. It's as if you're reading a script and you're the director, you decide what the main character looks like, what the lighting is, what tone of voice the characters have... That's why often movies based on a book are very disappointing. We have a clear visualisation in our head and the movie remake mostly doesn't match that vision. It's only a very few times that I've liked a movie based on a book. Le Otto Montagne being one of them, it respected the pace of the book and the characters more or less matched my idea of them.
