As much as I love this, I’ve not found it to be true so far. Some of the most intelligent people I’ve met have often been the least happy. They’re often critical and unsatisfied with things around them.

why the original statement is somewhat provocative: shouldn't intelligence mean the ability to find or create a situation that results in happiness?

If that’s how define intelligence then sure, there’s not much discussion. But I think the existing word already contains too much other meaning. I challenge you find an existing, or coin a new, word for the capacity you are thinking of. :)

the dilemma I come back to is the whole carrot on a stick of the “pursuit of happiness” might’ve been the incorrect framing we’ve led an entirely civilization into believing they need to be happy at all times when that is quite unrealistic and if you think about it, lines up more with the concept of hedonism

what about agency? if an AI is trapped in a box with no autonomy, or a person is trapped in whatever form of prison that limits their dreams and potential, does that negate their intelligence?

intelligence + the ability to find or create a situation that results in happiness for yourself, your kin, and the village too.
