So they removed encryption but also said they'll never build a backdoor, but then effectively built a backdoor...

No, they didn’t comply to the order to build a backdoor. Instead they removed encryption all together.

The way I understood it is that the encryption in question was just “archived” data. ie. don’t use iCloud. your iMessages are still e2e, no back door. if I’m wrong, please let me know.

guess the issue is a lot of iphone users use icloud backup, so any backups will be readable by the five eyes agencies - people sometimes use it to upgrade from one phone model to another, so its inevitable that it'll lead to a lot of data leakage
