No, they didn’t comply to the order to build a backdoor. Instead they removed encryption all together.

It isnt. Outcome of apple implementing a backdoor on one of its services is very different than announcing the removal of a service to avoid compliance with implementing a backdoor. The removal of the service is being announced and users have a period of time before disabling the feature. It’s also a service offered world wide so the backdoor would have much more serious implications.

outcome is the same, data can be read by govt under court order

The way I understood it is that the encryption in question was just “archived” data. ie. don’t use iCloud. your iMessages are still e2e, no back door.
