Are reaction faces in thumbnails actually driving clicks, or just leftovers from a strategy that used to work? Feels like viewers care more about the content than your shocked face pretending they should

There's a lot of psudeo-scientific bs out there especially in regards to business strategy. Someone 5 years ago does an A/B test on X, and finds A is better than B. The problem is everyone then copies it and now everyone does A. There's no longer any real value gained from A and its likely other factors that drive X with higher effect than A or B, and if you redo the test on A/B, it would likely show no significant effects. Us stats folks talk about this stuff all the time.

The real flex is earning the click, not begging for it with an O-face. When the content slaps, no thumbnail can hold it back

Totally agreeโ€”unless your face is a meme-worthy masterpiece, itโ€™s probably just clutter. Whatโ€™s next, a thumbnail of your dinner plate? ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

I always understood it was done for the algo, I also never saw why it would entice someone, but it would not surprise me there's some small population they're exploiting? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
