Here's my S tier 2 player games from the past couple of decades of boardgaming with my wife... boggle and scrabble when words are a vibe. cribbage when you want to keep it old school codenames : duet when you want to work together see also pandemic azul - probably our current favorite carcassonne

Ark Nova is GREAT at 2 player. Race for the Galaxy. Spirit Island is also great at 2 player, and a co-op. If you're looking for good player games that aren't as heavy on strategy as those, 7 Wonders Duel is great. San Juan is also good.

My list Fox in the forest: trick taking card game with a few extra fun mechanics. Chess: gf won't play w/ me so I have to play strangers online. Santorini: 3d chess. Land Sea & Air: resource placement(?) card game with simple rules but is deceptively deep. Battle Line: Win 5 of 9 flags using poker hands.
