at the end of his /farcon-nyc talk @fredwilson.eth mentioned that USV and his partner Brad have been looking for 15+ years to invest in a company that builds a personal, self-sovereign data store — and I froze when I heard that because funny enough that’s the exact idea/area of interest that got me into crypto in high school decided to take a few minutes to talk about why this is so important to me, what I see the practical use case/problem to solve here is, and how I’m going to keep pushing these ideas forward

thought it'd be relevant to link the two pieces I first wrote as I started embarking on this research with @cortex throughout the years! https://dylansteck.com/blog/its-time-to-rebuild-the-internet https://dylansteck.com/blog/tools-for-action

Important problem for sure However, you say “in the cloud”. It can’t be in the cloud. It has to be on your own devices you control. And multiple, for back up. https://warpcast.com/sky/0xbea28efd

Glad to hear you get this out there! Keep it coming. Side note: what software did you use to record/edit this?

same this is one of the most interesting areas of research for me personal compute to me means sovereign datastore + ownership of the computer there was this company called helm that died but it built a personal email server, hardware you had to buy. i thought that was super cool i imagine something like backing up your whole mac/phone but instead it's all these other products that capture pieces of your life, and the ability to make that datastore plug & play

You mention "in one place", but I think this is where everyone is still physically skeuomorphic in their thinking. Your data won't be on your desktop or in the cloud. It will be location-less. Data needs to be capable of sitting anywhere and everywhere while still having control over it. To do this, you have to have distributed key management of the data (blockchain/cryptography) and distributed content-addressable data (ipfs). Combining these two things together, you can then have your data anywhere and everywhere while still maintaining control.
