The “How much should people work?” meme is enduring because it’s a mirror that triggers rationalization for the reader’s own choices. Opt out of the frame! Choose the life you want and then optimize for that. No more arguments necessary.

idk, I saw it as just an opinion about commute being a non-negligible amount higher than Marchetti's constant, which just sucks for no economic reason. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marchetti%27s_constant

One thing the backlash against this highlights is that people cannot stand others not living / thinking / being like them (or their perception of themselves) My view: just leave her alone, mind your own business, "Do you"

+1. Also, the hard truth is that life is a game of tradeoffs. If you don't like commuting for 3 hrs, change the job for something's closer to you. If you can't find a job closer to you, improve your skills so you'll get it. If there's no jobs closer to you, rent something closer to the office, even if it's smaller.

It's the lack of sympathy that triggered me more than anything. The people responding, "that's nothing, X, Y and Z have it so much harder." X, Y, and Z would also have a lot of sympathy for this girl you armchair psycho. It's also a deeper comment on inflation. The worsening tradeoffs become more obvious at the bottom

I haven’t seen the tiktok everyone’s talking about but Jonathan Haidt details in his book The Happiness Hypothesis that 3 key things affect our life satisfaction & affect: 1. Noise level of your home 2. Community involvement 3. Length of your commute & level of complexity 3rd one surprised me but makes sense!

Agree a million percent. My red pill is becoming aware that everything and anything someone projects outward would be more accurately seen as a mirror 🪞

i feel her pain. my first job had to wake up at 5AM, catch a 6AM bus to town, get to work by 8AM. my situation is much better now but i don't think i'll ever work in-person again.

'"Optimize for the life you want" and other simple tricks to solve poverty. Now only three easy payments of $9.99!" Parade of entitled, well-to-do affirmations from sympathetic bootstrappers in 3... 2...

I’ve been looking for a comfortable office chair in a cubicle, preferably a 40-hr+ work week with a two-hour commute and a mid-level manager who micromanages every aspect of my tedious life. The compensation is just enough to get by and I can’t leave because I have good health insurance. #DreamLife 😅

People are out of touch with their humanity. So maybe social media wasn’t the best place to send out the message, but someone is upset over restrictive lifestyle + is emotional at that point in time.
