Contrarian take on Apple talking to Google and others for AI. Original iPhone launched with a dedicated Google Maps app. Apple learned how it was used and built their own app. Would imagine they will do the same thing with AI. Get paid like they do for search, but then use usage data to carve off over time.

their software has been historically pretty bad. - imessage. unusable compared to whatsapp. - calendar? ok at best. zero innovation. - notes. decent for keeping record of kids shoe sizes. probably their best product though. - reminders? painful. - freeform? did anyone even use that? - keynote, pages, numbers 😱

“Get paid like they do for search” - are you implying that Google will be paying Apple to put Gemini on the iPhone instead of the other way around?

this isn't contrarian, contrarian take would be the following: apple fully missed the train on ai and due to how fast ai improves they can't physically catch up partially because they haven't hired enough ai people (and can't find them no more) hence killing apple car and moving the team to ai

TBH, I don't care who provides the AI in my phone any more than who created the screen or the camera (not at all). I just want to be able to use something more capable than Siri.

I don't think Apple's DNA has what it takes to succeed in cloud powered AI and getting "good enough" might not be enough. Microsoft is infinitely better at cloud than Apple and they still had to rely on OpenAI for AI capabilities. Of course, only time will tell.

But do they have the compute, data, and talent to compete meaningfully here? Yes on data and talent but given their relationship with Nvidia I’m skeptical they can catch up to compute in the next few years. But I don’t think anyone can beat on them squeezing small AI from the chips on all their current devices.

I’ve seen some pushback to the idea that they’ll incorporate AI into Siri due to its unpredictability and potential for screw ups, particularly with Google. To me that’s the first thing they’d target for integration so I’m not convinced, but it did give me pause.

Question is how important RLHF and capturing interactions are for improving the AI AI might be more like the search engine, where it would be very hard for Apple to replace Google even though they've been hosting it on their phones forever as Google has captured the search interactions

Ah yes, I remember Apple Maps 😆 I'd expect Apple AI to be about the same quality.

This is standard for Apple. Apple built their own maps because of privacy and advertising concerns with Google Maps. They'll do the same thing with AI — privacy focused on-device inferences with dedicated ASIC. It will start off hilariously crappy, and get better in the background.

Many such cases. The FTC alleges Amazon uses a similar practice, using their data troves to choose which Amazon private label products to bring to market. Hope that Amazon follows suit because Alexa is horrible compared to others. But the data trove amazon houses now because of Alexa...

Yeah, I also think Apple just doesn’t have anything of GPT4 or Gemini quality that it can deploy short term. They will get to that point but probs not in the 3-9 month window. A better Siri alternative is the ultimate wedge to dethrone Apple. They should get Siri up to par asap

I think it’s a terrible decision and one I hope they don’t ink into place for a long time. If they wind up signing some deal for like a decade it will severely damage the brand in the coming years, IMO.

In my job I came to realize the best way to deal with reports is to take reports that are already created and remix them. I guess it’s that “great artists steal” or whatever that book title is called (Although that terminology is a bit tricky) I suspect that’s the game plan is to remix what is learned
