How soon before the NPCs in open world games are hooked up to GPT and can converse with you in character based on spoken audio from the player via a headset?

And then assume procedural generation like No Man’s Sky + Midjourney level graphics… Get lost in an infinite Hyrule, San Andreas, Tamriel, Azeroth with infinite storylines and side quests

Makes a lot of sense, directionally, to use procedural generation not just for world-building but also content (e.g., quests) and NPC interactions. There are otherwise diminishing returns in manually crafting massive open worlds, story arcs, and character lines the “static” way that AAA studios have done in the pa

I think about the cicero model and expect sandbox NPCs to "act offscreen" in various best interests to progress an arbitrary # of procedural B plots, in addition to conversing. question is if offscreen can accelerated/succinctly proven on retail hardware.

When people’s wallets are connected and the NPCs get better and better at emotional manipulation to buy items in game we’re going to need some new laws.

I feel like the NPCs could also have much more believable motives, interactions, and we would see compelling emergent narratives as a result. A sandbox RPG you could get lost in for weeks before you start to see the patterns that make it dull.

Webaverse is exploring this direction and they have been researching it since 2021, perhaps we will see the results this year.

i've always felt games like World of Warcraft were an early representation of the Metaverse. Used to enjoy just logging in and spending time in that world. With NPCs that can hold a conversation -- that would take it into a whole different level 🔥
