My general career advice for people in their 20s - Figure out what you want to be when you grow up - If that's too hard, figure out where you want to be in 5 years - Work backwards from there, what's the best next move that gets you closer to that goal - Optimize for 1 thing at a time; optimizing for multiple things usually leads to worse near-term decisions - Avoid side quests rationalizing the optionality or ability to return the main quest later

this is helpful as someone in his 20s who might be optimizing for more than one thing rn lol also curious if you don't mind me asking, what was/were some of the single things you optimized for in your 20s?

in your 20s I’d just say figure out what you want to learn and do now, see what resonates more with you and go try it, learn from the most knowledgeable people in those fields and keep curiosity mindset

What about based on environment? The reality i have to believe is, there are those who have to do something else because what they want can't be done.

Life is beyond expectations. No one is ever prepared for what’s coming. Dan, you may revisit your advice once you approach your 50s. Btw, I would never have guessed in my early 20s what my career path would have been. Almost everything that kept me busy for 30 years didn’t even exist.

Does this mean I should stop building things like usehousematch.com or find.farcaster.info on the weekend and focus things which better help achieve my goal (eg financial independence by 30) Or should someone not be too prescriptive about how to reach that ultimate goal

might need to sit down and think about this soon... i always knew i wanted to do art my whole life, but also feel i got where i am by taking extremely impulsive decisions, but luckily on the right moments... i want the next chapter of my life to be more meditated and thoughtful.

Most people explore when they are young, and exploit when older. I’ll pick an even shorter time frame (1 to 3 years) when < 30 years to figure stuff out, and do 80:20 main work: side quest

I also like to break down smaller goals into seasons to keep things exciting. This summer I wanted to host a pickling party, forage juneberries, grow flowers, go climbing in Wyoming, and run the Grand Canyon. Those big goals can be kind of a grind, but the smaller ones keep life fun :)
