Typically seasonally. Take 60-90 mins to just reflect. The purpose is communication/catharsis. No solutioning except in the last 5-10 mins. Then the team lead (me) decides how to action on themes. As @jtgi said, people tend to want to add process to solve things, and that’s not always the best instinct.

Weekly ritual. Turn by turn 1. What worked. 2. What didn't work. 3. How to improve.

For me, after completion of a large project, if at all. I’ve worked on teams that did it every week to monthly to milestone based. Problem with retros imo: 1. People tend to fixate on improvements without considering how it might impact what went well. 2. There’s often the built in assumption that what happened before will happen again and could be prevented in the future. The result is a proliferation of process. Most tight knit, high performing teams don’t need them too often imo.

100% yes! On every more significant project, launch, or feature - the goal is to compare assumptions vs reality after things happened and also - because features or GTM activities are often loosely defined, it is needed to capture evolution of the thinking during the launch or even dev process nothing builds your team memory library better than regular retrospectives
