zora, rodeo and interface all leverage public farcaster data to solve the cold start problem for their own private social networks, with their own follow & comment systems. Follows & comments in these apps aren't published back to farcaster. is this a phase, or a broader indication of the long term incentives around apps leveraging social protocols just for GTM?

Apps can't fully use FC because they would need to gate on signup fees which is dumb. So they already need to manage their own social graph / follows. Comments are only relevant in the context they are made. Not everyone uses FC. Sure you could cross-post for the people who want to, but wasted effort building this.

Some observations: - Interface born before FC was popular. IMO it's been high friction to rebuild your social graph there. - Rodeo is establishing a different "context" around art mints, following the same people doesn't make sense. At Kiosk we're building on your FC social graph and composing with multiple protocols

the number of follows I'm getting on Rodeo the last two days is crazy because of this. Jury is out on weather that results in mints.

I think it's just a tech decision. And we don't have best practices yet. Use FC for social graph, content (solve cold start), auth, message storage, WC as dist channel... Pick and choose. Hard to rely on message storage right now given Hubs. But will be solved in time. And best practices will emerge as some FC adjacent apps start getting good growth.

i think the problem is there’s not an easy way to permissionlessly save custom data to farcaster protocol, you have to wait for devs to make the change. if fc storage was more neutral or turing compete, at least some of these apps might choose to store their custom interactions back to the network

i want to use as much FC protocol infra for /rhizome as possible with specialist features on my backend. i think the term "client" is a scale now. and is totally context specific.

It's a matter of sequencing. If the rodeo network grows to sufficient scale, we'll contribute back to the protocol to ensure we're sufficiently decentralized. But that's not the priority in growing a net new network from scratch.

My hunch is that the goalposts will continue to shift to refine the requirements for apps leveraging huge, default social networks. i.e. it's not enough to simply have millions of "users", but those users have to also engage via x, y, z.

Personally would love to port everything from here over to either app. Been wondering why gtm only.

I didn’t realize this until now. First thought, yep makes sense for these businesses. Second thought, that makes these clients, apps just another socmedia and reduces value prop for users & other Farcaster builders long-term. Another point is that not everything needs to be shared and it is also valuable to not only have 1 massive social graph but multiple social graphs like a MASTER zkIdentity where you decide which of the sub identities you want to share. Maybe sth for Farcaster to consider.

Nothing has changed tbh. FC cannot be trusted bc Merkle cannot be trusted bc WC is closed source etc. Honestly unless this changes or there‘s huge growth, I don‘t think people are just gonna turn a blind eye to platform risk

I'd like to see apps containeraized (probably not a word) on FC so I don't have to jump to different places ... almost like channels style but for apps

Sustainable Differentiation & Balancing Visibility and User Experience are key motives here. These dynamics will persist until solutions like enhanced privacy features and more flexible ways to manage context (like app specific containers within FC protocol) are implemented.

It should be an option, but not the default. In web2 LinkedIn is a very different place to Facebook or Instagram and they are different again to TikTok. Context mattters.

In @vibraso.eth we took the other approach. We are fully connected with Farcaster so not only you have solved the cold-start problem, but also to the level of follows, comments, likes and recasts. This means for example, that your lives and videos posted in Vibra are ofc visible in warpcast, and they all make MOXIES.

Are we seeing a temporary trend, or does this reflect a deeper shift where apps might increasingly use social protocols like Farcaster for growth, but keep user engagement within their own ecosystems long-term?
