I love Costco but we need much stronger regs regarding factory farming. You’re telling me you hatched a chicken, raised it from birth, butchered, transported, and rotisserie’d it for under $4.99?

Beat $4.99 I've ever spent 😅 Although I agree about the economics.

I used to think chickens were just dumbasses. Then I raised some. Every single one has a unique personality/attitude and quite a bit of intelligence. I still eat the fuck out of some chicken though, just not my chickens, and they gotta be cage free. Having some egg layers changed my whole perspective.

The political peace of low prices & inflation is worth the ethical ills of factory farming, at least that's how I see it

It might be a loss leader like the $1.50 hotdog — anchors low prices in the minds of their customers even though some things in Costco are more expensive than other channels

The ethics of this 5 dollar chunk of meat are simple. Don't have any and treat animals, well such that it's not a living being. Take a peak at how these things are farmed in a factory. It ain't pretty, and it definitely ain't humane by any means. But hey, it's cheap, right.

These perform multiple functions: 1) a loss leader 2) capacity buffer 3) negotiating volume 4) quality barometer There are likely other reasons as well. I understand your concern and hesitation, just also know the lens you're applying here is not the lens to apply here.

Advocating regulation for the health and well being of a living creature over maximal resource extraction and profit? Smells like degrowth. 😋

The size of the chickens compared to the rest of the world is what scares me the most.
