my thesis: tipping and social engagement tokens would reward creators. the reality: tipping and social engagement tokens are consistently and ruthlessly gamed by noise generating farmers who don’t give a fuck about the creator economy. and their bullshit drowns out the creators.

because there’s no belief in the mission, because they’re just farming a token - instead of giving a shit about content or creators - they dump the token constantly, meaning there is no reason for people to invest in the token or in creators, and meaning creators earn pennies if anything because the price keeps crashing.

Is there a foolproof method of rewarding creators without it being gamed?

Tipping with a meme/shitcoin is questionable and unsustainable for creators, and likely is net negative. It isn’t materially helpful unless sold and has insufficient reserves, hence ponzi-like community pressure to prevent selling. Tipping tokens with stable exchange value could be meaningful to creators, but seems like there are only limited examples of this working at scale. TikTok gifts? Reddit gold? Do creators make much from this model?

Yes, the accounts that are most often tipped are usually those who don't create anything creative. In all recent seasons, I've received a low amount of Degen. Moxie is not going to be different; only big accounts are making a lot of Moxies.

Much to my chagrin, I find myself mostly agreeing with your take on this reality. If anyone disagrees with your thesis, I’d like to hear the reason(s) why. Perhaps it’s the thesis that we collectively need to be reminded about on a regular basis.

I don’t think tipping is perfect…but I think it’s in the direction of the truth. For me, it simple…reward ppl for value that they’ve added to your day; sometimes it’s art sometimes it’s ideas. 100 $degen

I’ve never managed to articulate it so clearly but I agree strongly with both the promise and the reality. 😞

Many have lost their faith in the platform as a whole for exactly the same reason (e.g., Beeple featured artist @meysvm). I’m hoping Moxie will be different.

I've hated tipping my entire life. Tipping feels like something rich people have the luxury of doing and poor people get shamed for not being able to afford to do. It's a remnant of superiority culture. "I have more money, so I'll get better service" Crypto tipping is no different, despite all the efforts to wrap it in a different bow. The more you 'engage' the more you get to tip, as if engagement is some magic metric that makes you more valuable. Basically, the more of a real life you have in the real world, the less valuable you are in crypto tipping culture. The more degenerate you are, living perpetually online and becoming completely owned by some niche subculture (aka unable to think unique, creative thoughts outside of that subculture), the more valuable you become (more tipping allowance). It's just more tribalistic nepotism and plutocracy all the way down. Crypto just exposes that flaw and runs it down to zero via farming as a result. It is a flawed concept from the start.

Gotta fine tune the incentives. Think degen is on a good way that everyone with a tipping allowance has skin in the game and there are some basic rules to adhere to. Ultimately tipping needs to come more out of individual pockets and should be a single click of a button.
