Founders, what's your take on vacation policy? "Unlimited" moreso means "unlimited within reason", which is ambiguous and often leads employees to take less vacation. Fixed limit that increases with seniority?

In say France 7 weeks is normal, 3 weeks leaves a lot to be desired, 2 is shameful.

Obligatory 4 weeks for everyone and then unlimited extra on top of that.

Why is letting employees use it at their own discretion a bad thing. It's on the founders to set the tone and cadence for "cult of busy". If there's an unspoken expectation of working 24/7, even when on holiday, well that becomes a hedonistic treadmill. Rest is work. Leaders who recognize and value it, I think win.

An ambiguous policy is never a good policy. I’m a fan of just setting fixed number of days and don’t leave the burden on employees and the managers to guess/negotiate what’s ok.

Availed unlimited vacation provides nice cushion for extreme hustle. Else employees (reasonably) make a different tradeoff/bargain with time. Extreme hustle good or bad? I wish I knew...

Only experience is with early stage and it was "whatever you want". Longest somebody took off at once was 2 weeks. And "closed" xmas through new years (just asked people esp devs to watch for outages)

"Unlimited" with a recommendation (3 to 5 weeks depending on how American / French you are) works great at a startup. The key here is that diff people *need* diff amounts, so a little bit of flexibility can go a long way. For example older people with dependents might have diff constraints than single 20 somethings.

21 business days, can be flexibly taken; be flexible about individual needs (more so with seniority); give the week between xmas and new years if possible.
