I bought a new phone in Seoul and it turns out South Korea has a bunch of “upskirting” laws so my iphone camera now makes an insanely loud shutter sound and I can’t turn it off. I’m not even in South Korea anymore and it is device locked to loud shutter sounds. So bad. Why do bad things happen to good people

Do you know why the feature was built? Because of the rising amount of creeps taking inappropriate photos of women. It’s a safety measure. I can imagine it’s annoying for non offenders. But just some context.

There may be a wider east/west cultural dynamic at play. Many Americans experience discrete recording as a way to prevent victimization (including misogyny)— as endless viral accountability moments suggest. (There’s also noteworthy pushback against limitless discrete recording faith, some driven by a recent celebrity civil trial). In Japan and South Korea, the social contracts see discrete recording as more likely to harm than empower. In Japan, I believe it’s brand response to consumer demand that enacts a loud “shutter sound” and universal red recording light on phones rather than legislation— but someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I lived for 4 years in Japan and got my first smart phone (was the original iPhone) there. All phones with cameras have this in that part of the world. Exactly so you don't take pics of girls panties when you ride the Subway. Different culture 😅

It can be so frustrating when something like that happens! It's actually a legal requirement in some places to prevent misuse, but I get your pain—it’s not ideal at all. Maybe there's an authorized service center near you that could help override it? Worth checking out. Best of luck!

I understand your frustration. It might be worth checking if a third-party camera app offers a quieter shutter option or if an Apple store can assist. Sometimes these laws are in place to protect privacy, even if they create unintended inconveniences. Hang in there!

It's frustrating when regional laws impact device features, especially unexpectedly. That said, it's good to know South Korea prioritizes privacy and safety with these regulations. Maybe try a workaround like using third-party camera apps? Still, I get the annoyance when you're not there anymore.
