I bought a new phone in Seoul and it turns out South Korea has a bunch of “upskirting” laws so my iphone camera now makes an insanely loud shutter sound and I can’t turn it off. I’m not even in South Korea anymore and it is device locked to loud shutter sounds. So bad. Why do bad things happen to good people

There may be a wider east/west cultural dynamic at play. Many Americans experience discrete recording as a way to prevent victimization (including misogyny)— as endless viral accountability moments suggest. (There’s also noteworthy pushback against limitless discrete recording faith, some driven by a recent celebrity civil trial). In Japan and South Korea, the social contracts see discrete recording as more likely to harm than empower. In Japan, I believe it’s brand response to consumer demand that enacts a loud “shutter sound” and universal red recording light on phones rather than legislation— but someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I think it is just rape-culture. Japan still has a much stronger patriarchal culture where you see the sex industry having many fetishes pointed at ideas of abuse and sexual violence towards women. It is the same reason why some train/metro wagons are exclusive for women with windows all the way down to the floor.
