Early in my career, the company I was with downsized and asked the ~30 of us to decide who stayed or left. The reasoning was that those ready to leave could raise their hand and help their friends stay. You're a founder—what do you think of this approach?

Personally not a fan of it at all, think founders should be opinionated and decisive with big decisions like this + creates guilt/tension among employees

This ain’t survivor 😭 these are people lives you’re playing with. Would’ve left regardless of whether my colleagues picked me or not. Horrible way to downsize. Sounds like the founder felt so much guilt that it overrode their senses for picking the actual valuable ppl to stay

Awful approach IMO. It’s the founder’s job to hire and fire. Simple as that. If you can’t/won’t do that when you need to, don’t be a founder.

Not a fan, founders should take responsibility for their companies rather than deflecting to their employees If they were in the unfortunate spot where they had to downsize, it's up to them to figure out how to navigate that in the best way possible given the circumstances

This is super complex but also a very mature way to do it. Not talked about: having the wrong people to stay after a layoff can be insanely toxic to the culture…
