It’s a good post. I think we can add something to it by thinking at the tribal level, not just the individual level. 1) First, rightism is straightforward tribalism. They are for their tribe. So they are against everyone outside their tribe. 2) Leftism is backdoor tribalism. They are against bigotry. Also, everyone outside their tribe is a bigot! So they are against everyone outside their tribe. 3) This is how the rightist gets to National Socialism while the leftist gets to Socialism in One Country. The rightist invokes master morality to dominate. The leftist invokes slave morality to *dominate the dominators* — like the dictatorship of the proletariat. And then they also ruthlessly dominate. 4) The alternative to both rightism and leftism is actually internationalist capitalism, which has win/win baked into it. 5) So, merchant morality or founder morality is the positive-sum alternative to both master and slave morality. Yes, you do seek to win. But you only win if the other guy also wins.

I don't totally agree with you on this. The idea that leftism can turn into backdoor tribalism by labeling outsiders as bigots is a funny point. It is true that efforts to combat bigotry can occasionally result in discriminatory actions. On the other hand, a lot of leftists work toward equality and inclusivity, trying to eliminate structural inequalities rather than fostering new conflicts.

Leftists are not Rightist. Rightist are not Leftists. But Merchants/Founders can be Leftists or Rightists. This suggests the Merchant/Founder morality occurs on a different axis and isn’t at all alternative. I also have no idea what Merchant/Founder morality is exactly.

Can you define internationalist capitalism a bit more? It seems like the Thomas Friedman days of globalization are behind us. Protectionism is in and it leans right. One could argue that Iron Curtain 2.0 is already raised. Are we entering an age of spherical capitalism, ie. NATO-aligned capitalism vs. BRICs-aligned capitalism?

International capitalism is only win/win if both sides don’t use any force to enhance their gains, no?

Balaji is trying to prime all of you to accept what the tech fascists are craving to do: Take complete and total control of all aspects of society which essentially means he thinks he is a god and he believes you are not smart enough to make decisions for yourself. Don’t buy it. His “gray tribe” = tech fascism

Are you looking more so at extreme leftist and rightists? I guess we have no choice but to look at the extremes.

The role of identity politics in tribalism is complex. navigating these issues while promoting inclusivity and understanding would be difficult but should be attempted

Capitalism without consumer protection will lead to even more exploitation - monopoles and state-private sector collusion must be avoided at all costs. What we observe now is the later, which in the end converge towards communism.

Wait! You’re on to something Your analysis highlights in details and interestingly how tribalism manifests in both right and left ideologies, each claiming a moral high ground to justify domination. It's fascinating how you position internationalist capitalism as a win/win alternative. Given these dynamics, i wanna ask…..how do you see the future of global cooperation evolving amidst rising nationalist sentiments?
