Where do you stand on solipsism? I see it as foundational to virtually everything else (in a first principles kind of way), and yet it is almost universally brushed aside as irrelevant, which I find oddly frustrating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solipsism

Is it brushed aside as irrelevant, or as “wrong”? One problem with solipsism (still basic understanding here) is the perhaps-too-easy settling into individualism, selfishness, basically denial of the Other.

Nihilist dead alley. Completely rational but useless, you might as well kill yourself.

It's a hot topic right now in consciousness research. It makes sense that it's been shunned by Enlightenment era hyper-materialist schools of thought. I expect were going to see the pendulum start to swing back in the next 10-15 years.

I’m not a philosophy scholar, but it doesn’t seem foundational to everything else. No offense. Unless your view on solipsism extends to inanimate objects, what single species flora or fauna remotely exists outside community?

I'm curious why you think its "foundational to everything else"? I was never able to derive much use from it. To me it's a bit like the Simulation Hypothesis. It's cute but has no impact whatsoever on how one should live their life.

I don't think we need to be specific w/ solipsism, but philosophy should be taught in school. Teach kids how to think about big picture ideas

Solipsism unnecessarily complicates reality by asserting that external experiences are merely internal thoughts, adhering to the same rules as realism but with added, unwarranted assumptions. Essentially, it's a convoluted version of realism, adding complexity without offering a more accurate understanding of the world

I was once obsessed with solipsism. Camu provided some context to its practical existence. The Myth of Sisyphus. The Stranger. Dostoyevsky also, tbh. Crime and Punishment.

It's a nice theory, but it's overshadowed by better parallels such as plato's cave or simulation theory. The idea that everything exists in the mind needs a basis. It could be eg. Possible if we assume the environment that contains or runs the mind is artificial and not self sovereign.

it's a fun philosophical exercise until you realize its (un)ethical implications, like the disregard for others' realities
