Swiss' new first-class seats are so heavy that the center of gravity of the Airbus 330 is moved ahead of its forward limit, forcing the airline to install a counterweight aft of the aircraft. If you thought traveling first class was ecologically disastrous, imagine now flying a massively heavy steel plate around just to make it happen https://edition.cnn.com/2024/09/03/travel/swiss-airline-first-class-seats-too-heavy/index.html

Engineers: I bet we could save half a kilo if we switch to another alloy and shave down the thickness by half a millimeter 🤔 Airlines: Steel plate fixes everything 😀

Do those seats 💺ever get sold when they refit the planes? Id love to score some of the Marc Newson business class seats je designed for Qantas back in the day. Apparently a classic airline seat.

The people flying 1st class should be forced to provide that counterweight in gold.

The best place and most chances to survive in case of an accident is in the tail anyway. I happily let rich people take the front seats.

Even if I fly intercontinental twice a year since 1997 I took the first class only once and was for an upgrade they did after a mistake. For me already “flying” is a little miracle.

Surreal we’ve hit that point in air travel. That’s where the A380 really shined in providing a heavy first class experience with full suites and ‘the apartment’ while managing weight well.

That’s pretty wild—luxury seats are so heavy they mess up the plane’s balance and need extra weight added just to fix it. It really shows how adding comfort can sometimes hurt. How do you think airlines can balance luxury and environmental concerns in the future?👀
