As a parent, how highly do you value fostering independence in your children? Personally, I value it very highly, a bit higher than my wife, and I'm curious if that's a typical mom/dad dynamic or not.

I’d couch it more as agency than independence but very important

define independence. I would say I value it highly, but most important to us is a safe environment to feel heard. So, being "too independent" could have effects on that.

my wife has taught me to value very highly, from when they were really young. Can proudly say, they put on their own shoes, clothes, they feed themselves, & clean themselves in the bathroom etc. They recently turned 3 & 5. It’s been an amazing life hack & so happy my wife convinced me to push them

I personally had to grow up sooner than most for various external reasons. So I value this a lot. My issue is I am not the most patient in how I deploy the behavior I want or expect. Getting better at it though, like choose better words etc. My wife did montesorri early so she values it as well. But she was raised kinder or gentler so she is way better at getting the results she wants. Hardest thing for me has been letting my kid fail so she can learn that independence

Development just is the process of increasing independence, e.g. becoming able to function more by your own powers and being less dependent on your caretakers for your functioning

Yes, independence with respect and guidance and lots of open communication. Gotta help them get used to making choices and understanding consequences while recognizing mistakes are best teachers.
