As a parent, how highly do you value fostering independence in your children? Personally, I value it very highly, a bit higher than my wife, and I'm curious if that's a typical mom/dad dynamic or not.

define independence. I would say I value it highly, but most important to us is a safe environment to feel heard. So, being "too independent" could have effects on that.

For sure. Independence to me means being able to do many things on their own or at least try them before asking for help. I also prefer stuff like sleep training to teach them to be able to go to sleep on their own, or will try to help them calm themselves down without needing to be picked up, etc.
