I’m afraid, for worse

My biggest disappointment is the country is getting more and more unnecessary conservative. My home country has been on this journey for the last few decades, and it led to a disaster

How has the country changed from your perspective?

My biggest surprise is that a lot of Americans are selfless and do genuinely care about others. Applicable to individuals and bigger groups/communities.

Some examples: 

Met quite a lot of folks who were adopted or have an adopted parent/siblings.

Another one - a common stereotype about Americans is that you guys couldn’t care less about learning foreign languages. Imagine my shock when I found out you could choose to learn ASL in some schools. Logically, it’s not the most practical choice, but I’ve met hearing ppl who took those classes and continued learning ASL later in life

I’ll answer #3 too - yes, happier, and no, not happier

There are certain things that definitely got better, and certain things that I hard as hell, and I know I wouldn’t be going through these at home

However, there is truth to the “happiness is within” philosophy. You can change your environment, and it might help a little, but you will be carrying your misery with you anywhere you go and you will have to deal with it internally

#4 my family is not here but they visit - I don’t go back though

I think overall our relationship works better because we live so far away

1) The freedom to express myself and publicly praise/criticize anything 
2) Still having a chance at a happy life as a single woman in her mid-30s 
3) I actually do like and enjoy American culture and I LOVE English as a linguist
4) There are so many diverse places, big and small, to visit within the country, and there it’s not overly hard and/or expensive to get there
5) There are people from everywhere in the world here

Is your family with you, if not, how does it feel to be away from your family if they can't travel to the US?

Pros: owning my own home, everything in my hometown was 24/7, a vibrant cultural and social life, a lot of things were free (healthcare, for example)

Cons: awful weather, even more awful politics, toxic mentality of the people (men especially but women too), and tbh, I never fit in despite being born there and speaking the same language

I actually never dreamt of moving overseas but stars just aligned in 2014

By then, I had thought about getting an education/some work experience specifically in the US for quite some time. I had worked in entertainment my whole adult life, and LA or NYC seemed like the best place to help me advance in my career, whether somewhere abroad or back at home.

Still, for a while it wasn’t a great time bc I either didn’t have enough funds or had other commitments.

Then, the political situation in my country got pretty crazy + I had some personal things going on that just weren’t working for me anymore. Seemed like the best time to actually try and do something abroad
