And the logical follow up: what are teens today doing to make a few extra bucks? These tend to be areas that: -take advantage of new, emergent tech -folks oriented around prestige may ignore (because the pathways are less traditional) -incorporate some element of fun / entertainment

Classmates would write 10 songs on a piece of paper and I’d use my ~methods~ to download them, burn a CD, and sell them for $5. $7 if you wanted a colorful CD. $10 if you wanted me to curate the playlist for you. Sales spiked around Valentine’s Day and Christmas 🫡 I was responsible for many first dates.

– iPhone repair, modding, jailbreaking – upgrading to the iOS 7 beta (yes, people paid since it was such a big update) – selling unofficial school merch for football and basketball games – selling reusable water bottles – and of course I’d be remiss not to mention shoveling driveways on a day like today

I figured out if I took enough AP classes I would only need to take ENG 12 my senior year. My counselor told me I was fool for only taking one class, but it allowed me to work full time at a classic car restoration shop and pay for my travel hockey team, best swap of my time.

Textbook price arbitrage. Got required book lists for classes in high school, found price gaps between what they sold for in the school book store and eBay, bought the bigger gaps, and undercut the book store by selling to people in line outside the store.

right when i got my permit i mowed greens on the golf course at min wage, but got free golf! taught discipline because they needed mowed from like 4-6am before first round of golfers came out peaceful out there, and the smell of freshly cut grass on summer mornings 🤌
