Honest question for podcasters out there, I listen to a lot of pods, never paid for one. If I can watch/listen to your podcast for free on YT or Spotify, why would I mint it or own your token to get access? My guess is distribution, but also that the number of people willing to routinely pay for podcast content is small. Am I right? wrong? Change my mind

tipping. some people tip and minting is tipping or collecting. It's also a proof of being early. If none of the above fit, then you'll not mint one

I think making people pay for a podcast is putting money exchange at the wrong part of the funnel. This is basically gating access, I don't think a single podcast in the world is so exclusive to be worth that. Advertisers will pay more than individual listeners anyways

We don't expect anyone will mint every episode (but we do airdrop to our hypersub) but some epsidoes may be future valuable collectibles, especially certain interviews or special episodes. We've also activated episodes for access to events and have a few other plans along those lines as well. We see this the same as why do people collect vinyl still when they can stream an album/song for free? Not everyone will want to but for those who appreciate a collectible version, we make it available. Also -- you can watch the episode in your wallet. Right now, is this the best way to view/listen? Nope. But we have no idea what will be developed in the future. It's also similar to the argument for any nft really. If I can "right click save as" why would I mint? Because I want to own it and enjoy whatever benefits that ownership may bring. But we'd love you to listen for free and collect if you want to support to suppor the pod and own the episodes.

Right now it's mostly patronage, but I think there's a proven model for bonus episodes or other "exclusive benefits"

Exclusive content, early access, or special perks could be reasons. But yeah, the audience willing to pay is likely niche.

It’s a rebranded tip to the creator with a pretty receipt but it’s also a tool for us to interact with our audience. In our last episode we selected a user who minted all 4 of our previous episodes and highlighted them/their projects onstream. It’s like a fun community celebration that helps fund the show https://pods.media/okbanger/005-ritual

NFTs are app data. I’m 100% with you that existing reasons are only for a small set of people. The real reason will be that you can use the pods in newer, better, onchain apps. Right now the biggest apps you can use them in are wallets, marketplaces, maybe a music/audio player. Not very compelling. New apps with new possibilities will make it compelling. And my prediction is most minting will be free or close to free and mostly paid for by the app.
