speaking anecdotally, I invite fewer of my friends to FC now than I did a year or two ago. Still unpacking the reasons / thoughts behind that but curious if others feel the same.

I’ve been extremely active here for 6 months.  I don’t invite new people to Farcaster anymore.  I tried to onboard a lot of people at the beginning.  A core of users stayed but 90% of the artist community I helped onboard are no longer active.  It’s a graveyard of user profiles that I brought on.  A focus on how to get those users back on the platform seems like a better bet than trying to convince someone new that it makes sense for them.

there are some very clear underlying reasons why the people I know stopped being active here (for clarity, they are mostly artists and a handful of art collectors).  Until those issues are addressed, I would imagine that most new users will hit the exact same roadblocks.  Addressing those issues will potentially bring back those that have abandoned their accounts for the time being, as well as attract new users.

I would think it would be easier to re-activate a dormant user than find a new one as well—but then again I could totally believe there being a datapoint that says the complete opposite is actually treu

yes, the conversation about storing seed phrases sounds so utterly ridiculous to me every time I say it out loud as I am attempting to explain it to someone for the first time.  It’s a great way to end a conversation 😂

similar story, invited a couple of folks last year, mostly crypto native folks continue to stay while the rest are gone. Two non crypto folks, left the conversation when I mention the commitment to store the seed phrases

Let’s start with the low mint cost art platforms.  From a collector standpoint, they are interesting.  They are a great way to discover new artists and a way to experiment with genres that are not areas of expertise.  

From an artist standpoint, low mint cost art is a great tool in the toolkit.  The idea of a low cost mint has its appeal for specific scenarios.  Artists with a dynamic history in the on-chain art-world are going to naturally be hesitant to this model because its counterintuitive to how they initially priced their artwork when they entered this space in the summer of 2021 or anytime in 2022.  I’d like to see a polarizing side of the art ecosystem on Farcaster to balance out this low mint cost model.  This is enough to stop many artists from ever committing to Farcaster.

Agreed, this is my main focus.

I think another is that low mint cost platforms like Zora don’t inspire artists to spend enough time here, because they earn far too little to justify the time it takes to become a power user here

another way to frame what you said is that the risk for on-chain artists migrating from X to Farcaster in February or after was fairly low.  They could dip their toes into a new ecosystem knowing there was a reward for doing so.  Most people didn’t figure out the difference in communication styles between the two platforms.  X is billboard style.  Farcaster requires legitimate discourse.  I don’t know why that transition in communication style is so hard, but it is.  Many people didn’t dig deep enough into the Farcaster ecosystem to appreciate that its best features existed outside of tipping.

a lot of people who joined in feb or after joined bc of degen first, so it became increasingly difficult to retain those artists bc the shiny object faded real quick once the tipping mechanisms kept switching up. very few stayed and did the work to grow their audience whatever their motivation. 

any new platform, we join we have to build from the ground up and not being willing to put in the work doesn’t make sense to me. we can’t be handed everything everywhere we go? 

i kept telling people don’t onboard others under the guise of hey you can make money by receiving degen tips. it’s not a forever thing. alas.
