not a direct answer, but: i've experienced peak startup productivity when there are 3 people on the team, product person also codes, and we sync via whiteboard or a simple list in a shared doc.

Don't mind me, I'm just grabbing a seat with some popcorn to enjoy the arguments that are about to kick off But in seriousness, it depends on the company. I've found Enterprise companies to be terrible for checked-out PMs, resulting in engineering leads having to compensate for their roles. 50 $degen

In theory should be eng. in the absence of strong eng vp, then PM. This is not great but having PMs that can fill while righting the ship be a short term fix but long term isn’t a good practice.
