Travel tip: don’t carry just one credit card, even if it’s an international card. Some places might not take your brand. Example: American Express is great but not accepted everywhere. Also have a visa or a Mastercard. Seems visa accepted more places. And be sure to get one with no Int’l fees or conversion charges.

Last I checked every crypto card has crypto conversion fees baked in. Even those who say they don’t charge take a spread on the crypto conversion. For cards with no international fee, usually have to go with a paid travel or executive card. Personally I have found unless you travel often it’s not worth the yearly fee. That being said I am Canadian and have heard US cards have lower yearly fees so I could be completely wrong.

AMEX is accepted in very little places in Ireland. Catches a lot of tourists out.

I carry one of everything. You never know what you will run into! Travel is always an adventure even if it’s not intended to be one! Post Covid, went to Scotland and never got cash because everything was touch pay and used Apple Pay exclusively. Then got to a drink machine and desperately wanted water and we had no coins! Some kind souls bought us drinks but it blew my mind that we’d been there 3 weeks and never used cashed!

AmEx is almost useless in Europe. Visa or Mastercard a must have. Best to have both!

What I often hear is that AmEx charges quite a hefty percentage per transaction, so a lot of shops don't want it, cause it eats from their already not big margins. I think traveling with a Visa is a better idea. They tend to charge a lump sum per month, so more transactions means a lower per-transaction fee.

what about... well... crypto? 😅 but yes, Amex is no longer working in my country, Visa is everywhere (here), but I found MasterCard to be most widely accepted internationally (have not been to the states, though). I have Visa and MasterCard with me always. Revolut/Aircash virtual cards and top up accounts are also great, if you want to minimize risk.

That’s a good one! During my first months in the Netherlands back in 2017 I could not pay with Icelandic Visa in many Dutch supermarkets. At least the international fees were low. Still is not fully integrated in some towns🤯So yep…more than one!
