In multiple European cities now I see taxis being allowed to use the bus lane (while of course regular cars are not). What's the policy justification for this?

I like it. When I need to move fast to e.g., catch a plane, I take a taxi. Taxi drivers need to have a license, so they pay back some money to the city for utilizing the bus lane.

Because they are seen as public transport. Technically they are only supposed to do so when working. Personally I prefer to have them in the taxi lanes as they are among the least predictable drivers.

This is used to encourage the use of public transportation instead of personal vehicles to prevent excessive traffic congestion.

Public service vehicles. The more we use the less pollution. Is this not obvious?

In Ukraïne you can use the bus lane as well as stay in otherwise illigal places to grab the passangers, if you apply for the state license. Not all Uber/Bolt/Uklon drivers do this but all of the business class do.

1) Taxis carry more people than typical cars do on a daily basis. 2) And have more “uptime” as they aren’t taking up parking spaces. 3) They’re also more likely to be doing short hops, where a little extra speed from the bus lane is nonlinear. Saving 5 mins on 10 min ride is much bigger benefit than saving 5 mins on 60 min trip. 4) All that encourages people to leave cars at home and use Uber/taxis in the city. 5) All that gets better with self-driving. 6) Basically, you’d prefer a city with self-driving 24/7 ride-share taxis to one with conventional cars. It will have less traffic and better utilization. (Of course if all cars switch over then bus lanes will again get crowded.)

I don't know the justification, but this policy saved my ass a few times when I had to catch a train.

Taxis are seen as part of public transport. Letting them use bus lanes makes them quicker and more reliable, which can get more people to choose them over driving their own cars. I guess.

In my opinion, allowing taxis to use bus lanes helps improve the efficiency of public transport and reduces congestion. Taxis provide a valuable service, especially for those without access to personal vehicles, and enabling them to move more quickly can improve overall traffic flow and reduce wait times for passengers. Just my opinion...

Bus lanes are not max utilized in 24 hrs by allowing only buses? Taxi = ride sharing just as bus but in smaller scale. Could be the justification. I remember in North America there were specific lanes for ride sharing cars

Maybe the internalized justification of the taxi driver is he/she wants to make more money and can travel faster via bus lane?

ChatGPT gives me several answers, including that taxis are often considered part of the public transportation system, to reduce congestion on regular lanes, and other factors, depending on the city. 400 $farther

Most likely the taxi orgs/lobbies/etc have made a deal with the bureaucrats and they are also getting outcompeted by web2 ride-share networks so are being “protected”.

Interesting. Eventhough, in Vietnam we see coffee shops are using sidewalk for their shops.
