It's not enough to be "the third thing". There are so many possible third things that at times different people's proposed "third things" end up being almost exact opposites of each other. The vibe of being "the third alternative to escape the binary" is appealing, but it has to be matched with the right substance.

Such things are remnants of industrial era thinking. DAOs (broadly imagined) seem to be where things need to go, centralized power structures are a one way ticket to extinctionville. Alignment of capital and endeavor towards regenerative, mutually advantaging self creating and reinforcing economic structures is The Way.

Sometimes institutional designs (eg electoral rules) give a false feeling of polarization, when actually there's always at least four tribes at work within a given social group at any time. The work of Mary Douglas on cultural types suggests that a two party system will never fully represent everyone within it.

Third thing language in general just seems to package up what is an alternative to a binary but yet turns itself into a binary to the other two. (In context to the images you posted). At some point our world thinking decided it needed to be this or that. IMO we creatures will forever create binaries out of things that don’t need to be bc we’re stuck in this mind trap of this or that. Silly humans always wanting to simplify complexity.

I’ve long thought of Ethereum as uniquely adequate to a process philosophy (Whitehead, Deleuze), often portrayed as “exiting the dialectic” thru a logic of inversion. This usually means paying attention to what “ideology of substance” a given system is pedaling and positing entity-as-relational-nexus in its place. Transcends either/or by getting beneath the axioms & finding generative stuff there.
