Cats, like dogs, belong to the same group of mammals. The main diet of wild relatives of both species was mainly meat. Recent DNA analyses confirm that dogs have developed more copies of the so-called amylase gene during their evolution. It is this gene that is engaged in an enzyme that promotes the breakdown of starch. The presence of a significant number of copies of this gene made it possible for dogs to be more omnivorous. The feline family has lost genes encoding several key enzymes that produce vitamin A, prostaglandins and taurine. But dogs and humans still have the ability to synthesize such substances from plant-based precursors. However, cats should get them from meat.

Record-breaking offspring On average, a cat brings from 1 to 6 kittens per litter. The record is 18 kittens, 15 of which turned out to be viable. And the most prolific cat is a spotted tabby named Dusty, who lived in American Texas. The owners estimated that she had given birth to more than 400 kittens in her entire life. At the same time, the last time she "became a mother" was already at the 19th year of her life.

To add other foods to their diet, cats need to add such additional features that it is preferable to synthesize useful nutrients from plant foods. This ability has not been shown in felines for 10 million years of civilization. Doubtful,

It has been proven that cats are many times more similar to their distant ancestors than dogs are to wolves. Therefore, it is dogs that are more developed and tamed than cats. Cats, on the other hand, at least got used to living next to people, became more sociable with each other and much more receptive to people. However, there is no evidence that they have changed more in the last few thousand years.

There are about 200 breeds of domestic cats in the world Although, a rare person will be able to name more than 10-15. At the same time, there are only about 40 "natural" breeds, the rest are bred by crossing, sometimes even with wild relatives.

The Middle Ages are the worst time in cat history These animals were treated very differently in Medieval Europe. At that time, cats were considered a product of the devil and accomplices of the "dark" forces. Black cats were especially "unlucky" — it was believed that these were the ones witches got to help with magical rituals. For this, the unfortunate pets were often burned at the stake along with their mistresses.
