My take is if the Hillsong Church members were a highly creative, highly productive, and highly collaborative group of developers and product people then this reference makes sense Otherwise its just petty and pointless

They are all those things, yes. Some of their music is really good, engaging, and very well produced. My biggest criticism of them is that their theology can be shallow and self-centric (and occasionally unbiblical, imo). (ETH & BTC maxis might say the same about Base?) The church itself also had a couple scandals to deal with.
