figma learning curve looks really long (for the design file/wireframing part)... just diving in and messing around doesn't seem to work very well Is there a good cheat? lately I've been finding that the newest generation of apps have a very "quiet UX" style where it's not obvious how to do basic things

Nate Kadlac’s course is a solid intro. Not sure your use case though. I actually just hired him to coach me 1:1. Was very worthwhile https://approachabledesign.co/courses/8020-design-challenge

Really? I treat it like google slides or PowerPoint. A creates new artboard (I do 4:3 size) T for new text R for new rectangle And then just copy paste a lot of images It’s all you really need

Can I help? I am proficient in Figma and was an applicant for SOP. In any case, a good cheat is to know everything is a Frame and they nest in an Outliner form, and each Frame has coordinates relative to the frame it is inside in. Pen tool draws vectors and acts like a real pen, where you press Esc to “pick up”

This is the best Figma 101 tutorial I've seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t_dYhXyYjI&ab_channel=ButterAcademy

If you dig into frames, styles (color and text), text, and auto layout, you’re 90% of the way there. If this is for a book, it may not be an ideal tool for output to that format though. Indesign is going to be the typesetting tool for years.
