I did that originally and within an hour it was overrun with spam Maybe things have improved since then but without anti spam measures, popular channels would get overrun

you can add moderators to either approve requests quicker or deal with spam inflows. I think there's something to be said for public good channels, but if that is the case there's needs to be a public effort to uphold that good part and not let the channel get overrun by shit and/or irrelevant content.
