“Discipline” gets a bad wrap. It is not passive rigidity and thoughtless habit. Real discipline is very active. Actively constraining yourself, even when you don’t have to, especially when you don’t have to, all for the sake of staying clear-sighted toward your end and efficient in your movements.

One of my core values is “discipline is an act of self-care”. Everytime I don’t want to do something I think of that, and almost immediately after I do the thing.

I think discipline is also about convincing yourself that you can be a disciplined person. And that starts small imo, saying, I'll do this every day for 10 minutes... and then doing it, which reinforces the idea that, wow I can actually do this and one builds from there. It is definitely active, but I feel it does get easier once you got past a certain mental state of "I'm not that type of person" to thinking of it more like a muscle you train and it gets easier over time.

I am a big disciple of discipline tho I never thought of it this way so, are you saying discipline is not just about being a rigid rule-follower, but rather its flexible and intentional liberating ourselves from distractions and limitations to achieve our true potential?

I love how you put it … "actively constraining yourself" that's such a great way to describe it. It's not about being restrictive or limiting, but about making conscious choices that help you stay on track and achieve your vision. But what about when those constraints become too restrictive? At what point do you draw the line between discipline and stagnation?

love this Real discipline is about the power of intention, the ability to choose your path with wisdom and consistency. It's about making deliberate choices, actively choosing to restrain or redirect yourself, even when it isn't necessary, to stay focused on your goals.

I think your phrase “especially when you don’t have to” contributes to why discipline “gets a bad wrap” Doing things “when you don’t want to”, makes it hard to build an habit out of it, and makes it unsustainable You have to build motivation, you have to be genuinely interested, you have to make your brain perceive the action/activity as beneficial, that’s the way to be “disciplined”

Got a big, controversial question Is discipline ever flexible? (Ps- I don’t mean self discipline)

Discipline is a choice not a habit. It’s about being intentional and proactive and not just going through the motion
