Yes. In my previous job we ended up doing a lot of consulting w/ civil agencies and it was shocking to see the size of impact you can have in a short time. There are groups like 18F that are doing an amazing job of bringing transparency and modern software practices to a very old system. https://18f.gsa.gov/

For the right position/mission yes. E.g. JPL/NASA.

I took a chance and tried it out for about two years; while extremely inefficient in terms of processes, it provided me with some of my most rewarding professional experiences to date. YMMV.

My dream heading into college was to be a diplomat and work for the US Department of State. Then I read up on the career trajectory and realized I would be stationed overseas for years without being able to see friends+family often. Glad I chose tech, but part of me ponders how different my life would be today.

20 (formative) years in the Ministry of Defence doing R&D. Opportunity to learn a ton (and they paid for my undergrad education) but bureaucratic heavy, slow and high opportunity costs.

I've done it indirectly as a contractor. Good experience. Couldn't do it forever.

Opportunity cost of working a government job is too high That being said, I’m open to it, just don’t realistically see it happening
