why did the US lay off so many forest and park rangers

It's so incredibly sad, US forests and parks are such a valuable part of what makes living in the US so special. My sister-in-law works on forests/parks and said the situation is really bad

really want to understand the rationale that led to this decision

Doesn't seem to be much "rationale" in any of the layoffs, honestly. Other than punishing people who wronged him before. I follow the Alt National Park handle on a few social media apps and they started that in 2017 and oppose him, so maybe that is why? Maybe he's punishing them for that. I have some friends who work for government agencies and one of them said that if you don't indicate your support for him that you would be let go.

Those on probationary periods were let go because it was an easy group to target. Super sad situation and unfortunate for us all.
